Learn from the Land and the People at Restival
Something about the elements made us connect so much faster than you usually would...
Breathtaking terracotta landscapes punctuated with green cacti, homeland that stretches back till time began, a unique landscape that takes your breath away. The Arizona desert is the perfect place for Restival. You learn from the indigenous tribes that give the state it's calming majesty such as the Navajo.
The Restival property at Gateway ranch is aptly named as it serves as the doorway to transformation. As many people from last year will testify. After you've gained accessed this magical wonderland, the rules of the game change forever. Imagine you’re viewing the Harvest Moon at sunset, inhaling the clean air from the San Francisco Peaks observing the silence.
I loved being woken by the sound of faraway cattle, the coyote and the dawn sun glimpsing through canvas, rising to take photographs of the unimaginably beautiful sunrise and seeing my new family of neighbors rub their eyes, stretch, smile and do the same. It’s wonderful to feel part of a community, especially when you live in a fast-living city where work and technology eclipses old-fashioned human interaction. Something about the elements made us connect so much faster than you usually would. Combine that with excellent nutrition, frequent meditations, sharing our fears and creativity and you’ve got a lot of fulfilled, smiling faces excited to pounce back to their normal lives with a new realised joie de vivre.
An injection of humour and a shrugging off of things we cannot control – they no longer matter. I now think about the fragility of our existence and the power of the cosmos every day, and try to be thankful and peaceful in the face of our transience.
Restival partners with indigenous cultures. In Arizona, it’s the Navajo people who bring their innate wisdom and creativity to Restival. This September, we have put together an incredible set of experiences from Navajo peacemaking, horse whispering, artists' and jewelers’ workshops, mask making, sweat lodges, story telling, astronomy and so much more.
